US Media Studios Shares News on What Matters Most to Employees

Most workers know what it will take to keep them happy and dedicated to their jobs and to the companies they work for. If only CEOs would listen and hear what matters most to employees.

It’s Not about the Money

While true that people appreciate a bonus for a group goal, and the occasional cost of living raise on their work anniversary, what matters more is gratitude. A recent report found that 60 percent of workers surveyed placed more value on being appreciated by management than a monetary reward. Gratitude plays a significant role in employee satisfaction and retention. A genuine thank you from the boss or a manager makes the world of difference for many American workers.

Say It Ain’t So

There are some bosses and managers who fall into these categories and US Media Studios hopes they hear us:
  • Uncommunicative and emotionally distant bosses do not rank high on any employee’s list about good leaders.
  • Business leaders who do not give credit to workers are high on the list (32% of respondents).
  • Business leaders who do not give praise or express support fall closely behind not giving credit (28%).
  • Business leaders that do not help employees with promotion is a major turn off for most workers (24%).
  • Business leaders who view staff as replaceable (and remind them of that now and then) is another factor that compels employees to bolt (13%).

What Matters Most to Employees

Respondents (and most workers, in fact) want to feel appreciated by their managers. They want to know, in real time, that their hard work and dedication is appreciated. They don’t necessarily want to wait until the dreaded mid and year end performance review. If an employee did a good job on something today, let him or her know today. If it was a team effort, then thank the whole team.

USMedia Studios encourages business leaders to show and give gratitude and appreciation to your staff. It goes a very long way in convincing them you care.

US Media Studios Cautions Exercising When Angry

Sometimes, we need to run a few miles, pump iron hard, or throw ourselves into exercise to expend the pent up energy that we feel when angry. It may feel good. It may relieve some stress. And it could cause heart-related problems for people who are generally healthy.

Take a Breather

A massive international study recently tied stress or anger and heavy exertion to a triple risk of having a heart attack within an hour. Stressed out people or people who are angry are more likely to over exert themselves than those who aren’t. While regular exercise is good for everyone, too much of it, and when mad, or working out in the extreme, can be harmful. Medical professionals advise taking a breather and trying to relax for a while before working out, if stressed or ticked off. Take a slow walk. Sit down and breathe and try to clear the stress or anger from the mind. Drink a few glass of water slowly. Listen to calming music or music that immediately changes a bad mood to a good one.

Causes of Heart-Related Exercise Problems

Stress and anger are two ways most people report feeling ill and complain of chest pain—even minor chest pain. They double the chance of someone suffering from heart attack symptoms. Add physical exertion to it, and the chance triples. It’s important to note that the study mentions physical exertion was self reported and could be anything from climbing stairs to training for a marathon. Exercise is defined by individual activities. Exercise for me is doing a 20 minute workout video in the living room. For others, it could be vacuuming the carpet in the house to running 3 miles at steady clip. It all creates exertion. US Media Studios reminds all to find a way to relax a bit when angry, upset or stressed before breaking into a strenuous workout. You’re valuable. Take it easy.

US Media Studios Asks How to Know if Success is Yours

Success is measured in various ways and defined differently by most people. How will we know when we are successful?

Success Defined

Dictionary.com provides four definitions for success:
  1. The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors. Accomplishment of one’s goals.
  2. The attainment of wealth, position, honors.
  3. A performance or achievement that is marked by success.
  4. A person or thing that has had success.

Which one of these fits your definition of success? Some start-up business owners may define it as the achievement of staying in business during the first year. Others may find they feel successful if revenue was higher than expenses, and customers kept supporting them.

Personal Success

Personal success can be defined as personal goals and objectives which are met. It is also having success in love, friendship, and health. People, and business people, will consider themselves a success when they learn something about failure. One failure does not define a business endeavor, nor do many failure. Each one is a chance to learn from it, grow and try again, and try something new.

US Media Studios also relays that the business person who is successful will keep on finding new ways to add to that success. They are never stagnant in ideas or direction. They keep on moving forward putting defeat behind them, and learning from it. Success is not only tangible such as wealth or an honor earned. It is also intangible like good health, a strong family, love, and knowing that every effort was put into the endeavor to produce the outcome.

How do you define success?

US Media Studios Etches Guidelines for Creating Business Names

There is an incredible variety of names from which entrepreneurs can create or choose for their business. But it takes more than just creativity to choose the right one.

What’s In a Name?

What’s in a name? Well, there are plenty of steps to take in finding, registering and keeping that brand new business name that epitomizes your business.

  • Research the chosen name online to see if anyone else claimed it. A Google search is good for that.
  • Search for the name on the U.S. trademark database.
  • Use creative thinking to tweak the business name and search again on the database.
  • If not trademarked, apply for the trademark.
  • Register the new name with your state.
  • Create or update existing website with the new name.
  • Create a new logo or update existing logo.
  • Notify vendors and utility companies of the new name.
  • Notify the bank and any financial institutions of the new name.
  • Change business signs.
  • Update telephone listing with the new name.
  • Update all social media accounts with the new name.
  • Order new business-related paper documents, such as business cards and stationary with the new logo and name.

Why All the Bother?

While it may seem like there are many steps to creating a business name, it is best to protect the name you choose by following the guidelines etched in above. US Media Studios encourages entrepreneurs and new business owners to double check business names and take steps to protect the great one chosen.

US Media Studios Shares Retirement Fund Tips

As more Americans approach the age to retire, it pays to review when to take the required monthly distributions. US Media Studios shares retirement fund tips.

Monthly 401(k) Distributions

In most circumstances, the soonest someone can start receiving  monthly distribution from their 401(k) account is at age 59 ½ without being taxed an extra 10 percent early withdrawal penalty.  It’s also beneficial to know that there is no 10% penalty tax if someone retires early because of a qualifying disability or can claim financial hardship. But generally speaking, the US IRS says minimum monthly distributions from a 401(k) must start April 1 following the later of the calendar year when a worker reaches age 70 ½ , or they retire. There are other exclusions too. Take time to review the rules for retirement monthly distributions in your plan.

IRA Accounts

Workers who have an IRA must start taking the required monthly distributions once they turn 70 ½ . But if a worker is still working and doesn’t need the income, it’s best to roll the IRA into a 401(K), if the plan allows it. An exception to this rule relates to Roth 401(K) plans. The monthly distributions are tax-free since they the deposits should have been treated as taxable income while working.

The Four Percent Assumption

The old assumption that a four percent yearly withdrawal would be the perfect amount to add to any other retirement income is a bit outdated for today’s older working and soon to retire employees. Inflation is higher than it was back in the early 1990s.  Today, retirees could need more than a four percent withdrawal rate. US Media Studios notes that the four percent assumption would net a retiree less than they need make ends meet, and would need to be adjusted up, meaning less money in retirement accounts to carry a retiree through several decades of retirement.

In Closing

As financially challenging as it can be with the economy, high prices and jobs outlook today, it pays to deposit as much money as one possibly can into 401(k) and IRA retirement accounts. Many small to medium-sized employers have already stopped matching funds. Keep on adding funds to retirement accounts. Try not to take any withdrawals until absolutely necessary. If financial advice is needed, ask a trusted friend for a referral, a financial institution, veterans’ organization, or a representative from the retirement plan you have now.

US Media Studios Relays 2016 Flu Vaccine Information

Do you get the flu vaccine every year? Nearly a quarter of adults don’t get this annual vaccine for varying reasons. One of those reasons is having a reaction to the vaccine. But very few people who get the flu shot ever have a bad reaction to it.

The Flu Shot and Side Effects

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 157 million to 168 million doses of the injectable flu vaccine available this year. The vaccine is one of the most effective ways to reduce the chance of getting the flu. Yet, the possibility of feeling lousy from side effects keeps some adults away from the doctor’s office, community center or pharmacy. Soreness at the shot site that lasts for maybe two days is one of the aftereffects of the vaccine. Other complaints US Media Studios notes people make after getting the shot are: headache, nausea, and muscle aches, which can be the symptoms of influenza. These last perhaps a day or two and then go away.

Who Should and Should Not Get the Flu Shot

Children 6 months old and everyone else and especially seniors.
Pregnant women can get the flu shot.
Children under 6 months should not get the flu shot.
Anyone with a severe egg allergy should not get the flu shot

The Flu Shot Myth

Every year we hear people say they won’t get the flu shot because they think it will give them the flu. The truth is that the flu viruses are inactive and therefore, non-infectious in the vaccine. One cannot get catch the flu bug from getting a flu shot. If someone does happen to get the flu after getting a flu vaccination, they were already exposed to the virus before immunity from the vaccine was built up.

Stay healthy this fall and winter.

US Media Studios Reviews Fall and Winter Household Expenses

Household budgets are tight for many Americans. Yet, we still will spend a pretty penny to spiff up the home for the fall and winter holidays.

A recent poll from the National Retail Federation estimates that Halloween enthusiasts will spend $8.4 billion getting ready for the yearly fall holiday. That comes out to almost $83 per shopper and almost $10 more per shopper than last year. The estimate includes decorations, candy and the always popular costumes, which many people shop for in physical stores and online.

US Media Studios also notes from the survey that Americans spent more than $626 billion dollars in 2015 on winter holiday preparations. Meanwhile, it’s reported that we spend almost $76 billion dollars on back to school and college shopping, with Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Easter following in that order.

Fall and winter household expenses for home repair and preparation for cold weather should start now before the cold blast of winter air arrives. Check all windows and doors for leaks with special devices found in hardware stores.  A candle or cigarette lighter also works to check for air leaks. Caulk leaky window areas and add padding around the door frame. Run ceiling fans in the opposite direction to move cold air up and warm air down. Use the schedule function on thermostats as it saves electricity.

Fall is a great season to sleep with windows open a bit to enjoy the cooler air at night. If at all possible, it is also nice to open the doors and let fresh in and stale air out. This is assuming there are screen doors to keep closed.

Another way to save money on fall and winter household expenses is to bring out all holiday decorations and sort through them. Throw old ratty decorations and take stock of what is left and usable. Be creative and put Halloween costumes together from what wardrobe in the closet.  Dig deep. There may be some goodies in there!

Everyone likes to dress up for Halloween

US Media Studios Highlights National Fall Prevention Awareness Day

Today is National Fall Prevention Awareness Day. US Media Studios highlights important information for seniors about how to prevent a fall and the possible injuries that come with it.

Hard Facts about Falls
  • Two out ever ten trauma admissions among people over age 65 and older are due to falls and subsequent injuries.
  • Age, gender, a history of falling, prior health conditions, physical limitations, environment, and medication clashes can cause a person to become lightheaded, dizzy, and fall.
  • Loose throw rugs and loose carpeting can cause a fall.
  • Small toys and balls on a floor can cause a fall.
  • Hallways and rooms which are too dark when walking can cause a fall.
  • Loose cords and wiring can cause a fall.

Preventing a Fall
  • Seniors who have fallen or are prone to falling might want to check their homes for trip hazards and have someone remove or fix them.
  • Leave a night light on in hallways, bedrooms and bathrooms at night.
  • Ask a trusted pharmacist if any new medication will clash with regular medication. And ask if the dose is right for the height and weight of the person. Blood pressure that’s too low can cause fainting and falling.
  • Slow down when walking. Look around, hold on to countertops, chairs and other places to steady gait when walking.
  • Use a walking aid such a cane (many of pretty spiffy these days) or a walker if needed.

US Media Studios cares about the senior community. They enrich our lives and offer history, experience and knowledge that can be immensely beneficial. One fall can cause a bone fracture, concussion, or worse. Prevention is key in keeping our valuable seniors safe from falls.

US Media Studios Stresses Health Benefits for Women Stressed Out

Stress affects everyone. It wreaks havoc on our health, mind and soul. For women, the health effects stress can cause can undo the positive steps taken the day before to improve wellness.

Women, Food and Stress

Stress can cause plenty of wellness problems from high blood pressure to diabetes. And while both genders know to eat healthier and get more daily physical activity, stress can wipe out the benefits for women. Research published has shown that the benefits of eating healthy were diminished when women were stressed the day before. Healthy people who follow positive steps for improved wellness should find the best methods to reduce the level of stress in their lives. Simple methods to de-stress can be taking a walk, getting more daily physical activity, trying yoga or other relaxation exercises, a warm bath or sharing problems with trusted friends and family.

Going Forward

Stress is a part of every day life no matter the gender or age. Children feel it, men feel it, women feel it. US Media Studios does not recommend indulging in “stress eating”, no matter how satisfactory it may feel at the time. Unhealthy food and beverages are short-term “feel good fixes”.  Every once in a while, it’s not so bad. Going forward, stick to a healthy diet which is low in fat, drink plenty of water, and at least take a walk on work breaks and right after dinner. Here’s to women living longer healthier lives.

US Media Studios Shares Retirement Tactics for Boomers

A search on any website about financial or retirement news will usually turn up several articles geared toward the Millennial generation. US Media Studios takes time to share some retirement tactics for Boomers instead.

For the Baby Boomer Generation

Employees in their 50s and 60s spend most of their careers working hard, working long hours, and socking away money in retirement accounts. They know if or when they can retire. They know how much more they need to save before they can retire. They have a solid understanding about health care, social activity and perhaps even part-time work they might engage in after full-time works ends.

It is also essential that career employees in their 60s know that retirement account withdrawals are permitted and without penalty. If older workers in their 60s are let go, they can withdraw and use some of their retirement savings to help with expenses. There are circumstances, such as unexpected medical expenses, which can force someone to dip into savings also. However, it is best to avoid that and to continue to save as much as possible before finally retiring.

US Media Studios reminds that employees in their 60s might want to keep working until they have a good nest egg stashed way. Most 401(k) plans have catch-up limits. Workers can contribute up to $23,000 a year. Roth IRAs have a limit of $6,500. It’s best to diversify savings accounts so not all of the savings “eggs” are in one basket. The best bet is to keep working as long as possible or as long as one can afford to. Use retirement savings to live from as a last resort.

US Media Studios Examines Strategies to Cut Healthcare Costs

Health care is getting more expensive every day. Employees are paying more for health care than they were in previous years. Fortunately, there are thrifty strategies to help cut health care costs, as US Media Studios relays.

Stash Some Cash

One of the most effective methods of reducing the personal cost of health care is to contribute to a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HAS). Both of these savings plans offer employees a way to contribute pre-tax dollars into the accounts to be later used for prescriptions, co-pays, medical equipment, and the like. But there are differences in each plan to note:
The money in an FSA cannot be rolled over at the end of the employer’s health coverage. It must be used before the next pre-enrollment period begins. So, you use it or lose it.
The money put in an HSA is the employee’s to keep no matter where they go. However, the health care plan must be a high deductible one in order to qualify for this savings.
Another caveat is that some employer-paid health care plans do not offer either savings option.  But if they do, take one. Savings average about 30 percent.

Save on Prescriptions

Research and compare the price of prescriptions within your geographical area with GoodRX.com. This site shows you differences in prices for one prescription within a zip code range. People who have to pay out of pocket for prescriptions could find price comparison shopping advantageous.

Additional Ways to Reduce Health Care Costs

Warehouse clubs like Costco and BJ’s can be beneficial when consumers want to save money.
Get a 90 day supply of the prescription because it saves money in the long run.
US Media Studios suggests looking into The Partnership for Prescription Assistance, a free service that helps consumers get access to needed prescriptions.
Community centers offer free health checks once a month. Drug stores provide low cost vaccinations.

There are many ways to save on health care costs. We hope these suggestions are helpful.

US Media Studios Highlights Traits of Successful Entrepreneurs

What traits do the most successful entrepreneurs have in common?  Some very basic ones grounded in common sense.

The Path to Success Has No Potholes

Bad habits can get in the way of anyone with career and personal goals. The bad habits are like potholes in which an entrepreneur, or anyone really, can become stuck. Here’s how to not get stuck in these common potholes:

Get regular, restorative sleep every night. Turn the TV off early, get in bed and read something lightweight. Relax. High quality sleep is valuable for the mind and body. It enhances productivity increases energy, improves mood, and leads to overall better health. US Media Studios notes that overall better health leads to more success.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle every single day. Don’t overindulge with alcohol. A drink now and then to take the edges off a stressful day is okay. But drinking excessively wreaks havoc on every part of the body. It also affects decision making both when drinking and the day after.

Know yourself, trust yourself. Confidence is knowing who you are and what you know you can do. It is not arrogance. Confidence is not gained by putting other people, treating them in a condescending manner. It IS all about you. No one else. It is not about the negative people in your life, nor about the weak willed people in your life. No one knows you better than you. Avoid all other ones who can bring you down, if possible.

US Media Studios highlights entrepreneurs from different industries. Today’s innovators, movers and shakers, and game changers are not daunted by bad habit pot holes. Are you one of them?

US Media Studios Reviews the Marks of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurs are the movers and changers. They are the ones who can find innovative ways of fixing or correcting what does not work and what is broken.

Entrepreneurs mostly offer a service to everyone else. There is usually a piece of something ethical and good in what they offer. They want to help solve a common problem, or they found a new problem and are offering a correction for it. The solution or correction is offered for a cost. If the solution works, then the entrepreneur is rewarded by making money from it. But if the solution does not work well, is too lengthy or too complex, consumers won’t buy it. This is common sense. And this is honest entrepreneurship, as US Media Studios notes.

There are however an over abundance of newer businesses that seem to be copies of longer standing ones, performing the same types of services as the others, with far less experience and skills. While a brand new at-home business might seem like a great idea even its service solves a common problem, why add another entry into an already crowded field? All the social media posting and SEO-ing of the new enterprise will not necessarily pull in new accounts. It may bring questions, instead. It may or may not bring in any revenue. Too many social sites filling up the first two pages of a Google keyword search can look fishy to some consumers.

Consider instead what the consumer needs or wants and tailor the entrepreneurial endeavor in that direction. US Media Studios knows that this could very well be the golden egg in the basket.

US Media Studios Kicks Up Start-Up Discussion

What happened to all the start-up businesses in the United States?

The latest U.S. census data relays that there were 452,835 new businesses started in 2014. That’s down by about 50,000 that were started every year from the late 1970s to the mid-2000s. It is long reported that new businesses account for the greatest number of new jobs. But none of that is booming now, and hasn’t been since the Great Recession ended. People seem wary of getting into something that could crash cause them to lose money.

Start-Ups and Hiring

Start-ups generally hire less people than the big brand stores and businesses.  Major companies are seen aggressively recruiting and gaining new staff. They have the capabilities of utilizing outsourced vendors, some domestic and some foreign. Small businesses do not have this ability.

Restrictions

Other factors which prevent an entrepreneur from starting up are the mind boggling regulations in the U.S. Many businesses also insist a new employee sign a “non-compete” clause that prevents them from leaving and starting up their own company, for months or even years. With so many restrictions and stringent regulations, it is no wonder there are less new businesses than in previous years.

Future for Start-Ups

Many of the most successful start-ups were begun by an entrepreneur in their 30s. The Millennial Generation is rounding that corner. Generations X and Y are already there. The US Department of Labor notes there is an uptick since 2014 in new businesses. US Media Studios also notes that there are some steps established businesses and local, state and the federal government can take to spur new business growth: loosen up on the “non-compete” clauses, offer new business owners some tax breaks, give entrepreneurs support and financing if requested.

America is a great place to start a new business. If this is your dream, just go for it. Start very small and let it grow.

US Media Studios Relays Workplace Concepts for Success

No matter what size business it is, good, sound workplace concepts help both the business and the employees grow and be successful.

Empowering Staff for Better Results

The guts of any successful business are the people who make it operate every day. Employees, managers and business leaders are the blood in the veins of the company. Flexibility in both scheduling and work location gives employees the ability to work the hours they need and where it is most convenient for them. If staff can get their work done from home a few days a week, as opposed to being in a strict office environment, then they should be able to do so. Many people relay how they get more work done, are more creative and proficient at home than in the office. Flexible work schedules are more accepted now than in previous decades. When someone does not have to use creative time to commute to an office, they start work earlier and are more productive.

The Two-Way Street of Common Sense

Common sense seems to be absent from so many aspects of living and working today. From the rabid comments and posts on social media to the workplace, it’s curious how we manage. Common sense is best when applied by employer and employee. If there are changes in structure, work responsibilities, schedules, benefits, etc, both parties need to be practical and flexible. Good employees do not need to be managed. Good managers need to communicate if any workplace concepts change. US Media Studios reminds that common sense in the work place is a two-way street. No one can get away with something that any other business would not allow.

US Media Studios Relays Benefits of Health-Related Apps

The American Heart Association found that people who used health-related mobile apps or Internet-based applications were more effective in engaging a healthier lifestyle, including increased physical activity than those who did not.

How Apps Boost Health

There are 640 million adults and 110 million children who are obese in the world. In the U.S., roughly a third of adults and children weight more than they should. Overweight people are at a higher risk of health and chronic health problems. Mobile and Internet apps have proven to help people adopt a healthier lifestyle, and add more physical activity to daily schedules. The AHA study reviewed studies from 1999 to 2013 to evaluate the effects of using the Internet, mobile phones, stand-alone software tools and wearable devices, and the effect they have on personal health. Researchers found that those who used mobile-based programs were more likely to increase daily physical activity than those who didn’t use a mobile app.

Wear It and Move It

Wearable devices that measure and relay how much physical activity someone does are also effective in improving health, US Media Studios relays. The more specific or personalized the message, the better than chances of engaging in a healthier daily diet and adding exercise to the day or week. Most people who use wearable devices regularly exercise, even if it is to just take the stairs more often. The AHA study also relays that self-monitoring and goal-setting programs with multiple methods of communication messaging were effective, and results were better when there was some level of communication with health care providers. While there may be some people who scoff at purchasing a wearable health-related device, there are benefits to it such as monitoring daily physical activity and water intake, as well as measuring and recording overall health objectives.

US Media Studios Relays FDA Finding on Antibacterial Products

What cleans hands better than soap and water?

The FDA Findings

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, (FDA), recently published its findings on the effectiveness of antibacterial soaps. In its report, the federal agency found that among several ingredients in antibacterial soaps, triclosan and triclocarban are not more effective than using soap and water to wash hands. Then two named ingredients are intended to be used with water, and rinsed off. Manufacturers of over-the-counter antibacterial products which include those two ingredients are now no longer permitted to market them as such. The FDA also states that manufacturers of products with those ingredients have not proven that that they are safe for long term use, nor any more effective than using soap and water.

Cold and Flu Season, Schools, Workplaces

US Media Studios long believes that the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs in commonly populated spaces, and when germs are most likely to be spread, is to wash hands regularly with warm water and soap. No special soap is needed as most are effective in killing germs. Schools and workplaces, where more people are located and congregate, should consider antibacterial soaps with regular soap dispensers and running hot water.

If soap is not available, and hot water is not provided, a hand sanitizer product with 60 percent alcohol is recommended, such as disposable wipes and hand gels. Washing hands is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Other methods of germ prevention is cleaning desks, telephones, doorknobs, lunch and break room tables and other objects with a germ-killing solution or spray.

Nothing cleans hands better than soap and water. Read more on the topic here

US Media Studios Highlights the Top Five Cities for Start-Ups

We really don’t like to brag. US Media Studios is located in the south Florida area which came in second place on the Kauffman Index: Start-Up Activity creation report. We can attest that the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, Florida area is a great place to start a new business. As are the other four.

Report Background

The Kauffman Index: Start-Up Activity (PDF) report is one which compiles and crunches data to determine the rate of entrepreneurs opening businesses in any month. It also runs the data to find out if the businesses started because the market was good or because its owner had no other options for work. The report also measures the number of newly created businesses that employ at least one other person per 1,000 companies.

Top Five U.S. Cities for Start-Up Creation

Austin, Texas came in first and understandably so. It is a growing vibrant city with a continual growing entrepreneurial community. It is a supportive city for start-ups, no matter which industry the business is in.

Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL came in second. Other than its low tax rate and low cost of living, the area is rich with immigrants from the Caribbean, Cuba and South America. These enterprising residents open the smaller mom and pop shops, eateries, craft houses, etc.

Following these two are: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. Los Angeles has always has a strong creative spirit that invites business creation. San Francisco is California city in which high tech start-ups thrive. Las Vegas has year-round pleasant weather and plenty of space in which to open a business.

US Media Studios believes in start-up creation, supporting those new businesses, and cities providing support for the entrepreneur. If not, we would not be here ourselves.

US Media Studios Notes Affordable Cities to Open a Business

One part of the American Dream is to own your business. With that said, there are some cities which are more affordable to begin a start-up than others.  US Media Studios notes the five most affordable cities.

Chattanooga, TN

It is not surprising to us that four of the five most affordable places to open a business are in the South. Located in sunny south Florida, we can attest to the number of start-ups that open here.  We took a look at the data run by SmartAsset for start-up costs over the first year of operation: cost of office space, price of gas and electricity for that space, legal and accounting fees, and payroll costs for five full-time employees making the city’s average annual salary.

Based on these factors, below are the five cities where entrepreneurs might want to open their new venture’s doors:
  1. Chattanooga, Tennessee
  2. Wichita, Kansas
  3. Greensboro, North Carolina
  4. Columbia, South Carolina
  5. Knoxville, Tennessee

Many American cities are great for starting up a business.  There are events for entrepreneurs to get together, financing to help the new business owner become and stay operable, and some cities have a great number of graduates from universities and tech schools to recruit.  It should also be noted that some of these cities, and others in the South, have an affordable cost of living, which makes living there an added bonus. Some of the top ten cities have strong economic support in specific industries such as education, technology, or healthcare, which would be great for the entrepreneur with products or services in that field. Click here for the full list of affordable start-up cities, and more the list of most expensive cities to open your own business.

US Media Studios Notes the Best U.S. Cities for Everyone

Most Americans would say that their city is best place to live. There really is much to love about our hometowns and home cities. Despite the daily grind of life, traffic congestion, and cost of living rates, home is where we long to be, where we are eager to return after vacation, and where we feel most comfortable.
The Woodlands, Texas

Great Places

US Media Studios knows that there are hundreds of great U.S. cities. Each one has its own personality, its on history, and its own unique benefits. Below are five U.S. cities which a recent survey ranked as being some of the best. They are in not in particular order:

The Woodlands, Texas – Despite its name, the outdoor activities are not all that plentiful. However, it does boast plenty of great job opportunities and an educated population. Texas is a great state in which to live, anyway.

Austin, Texas – There is plenty to love about Austin from its vibrant music and entertainment scene to its schools, neighborhoods and its diversity.

Boulder, Colorado – Clean air, an abundance of outdoor activities, great public schools, and short work commutes make this city beneath the mountains one of the best in the country. What more could one ask for?

Arlington, VirginiaArlington is really more of a county than a city. Nonetheless, it is close to the nation’s capital, therefore, offers plenty of outdoor events, monuments, and great public transportation. Its public schools are rated A-plus, and its family friendly.

Provo, Utah – It is well-known for its nightlight, short commutes, and overall good health and fitness. US Media Studios also notes that the city boasts short work commutes and a happening night life.

US Media Studios Drives Road Safety Tips

How are the roads and interstates where you live? In some parts of the country, the main roads are free of potholes and unsecured debris scattered across the lanes of traffic. In other parts, the commute to and from work, or on a road trip, can be wrought with safety hazards. US Media Studios drives road safety tips for every person on the road – two lane country streets or major four land highways.

Look ahead

Look Ahead

It pays to look ahead. Drivers should scan the road ahead for traffic slowdowns, debris on the road, or rough roads. It is also best to not tailgate the vehicle in front of you. Leave room between your vehicle and the one in front of you to allow for sudden stops, or when at traffic lights.  It can make the difference if you need to swerve or stop suddenly when there is debris in the road. The American Automobile Association reports that more than 200,000 wrecks in the last four years can be blamed on blown tires, trash and other debris that litters roads and interstates. It doesn’t matter where you live, debris will end up on the road. From palm tree fronds to a plastic grocery bag, road debris is can wreak havoc on any vehicle and driver. If carrying a load, be sure it is secured and covered with a strong tied down tarp.

Wet Roads

The most dangerous wet road to drive on is one which is just wet enough to cause skidding. When a light rains falls and wets the road, it makes it more slick from the oil and water. Slow down and allow plenty of room to stop. Torrential rain can also wreak havoc for drivers. Poor visibility along with flooded intersections or places where drains are located creates trouble. Stay in the middle lane, if possible, to avoid flooded intersections or drainage areas. US Media Studios encourages readers to slow down, take your time, and arrive at your destination safely. Pull of the road if necessary and wait the rain out. Your life is more important than making it anywhere on time unsafely.

US Media Studios Relays Hack-Proof Tips

Who better to learn about hacking tricks that work other than those that are paid well to do it for some of the world’s biggest corporations? US Media Studios relays hack-proof tips for all users.

The Internet-of-Things and Social Media

Many people spend a great deal of time on the Internet and on social media sites every day. Yet, the most cunning hackers can break into the digital coding or a newer vehicle through the Internet and take control of it. The same can happen anything digitally connected in the home or office.

Social media sites are also easy for hackers using phishing schemes to gain personal and financial information about users. A hacking team announced, at a recent convention, it created a bot than can phish social media users and their interests, and send a catered post or message. The social media user believes the post or message to be authentic, clicks it and the hacker has their personal information. It pays to be careful what links we click on when perusing social sites.

Chip and PIN Cards

US Media Studios has read many reports about the hazards of using this new technology. It is usually touted as the safest way to use a credit or debit card. In reality, the card readers can be easily tampered with and financial data stolen.

Public Wi-Fi
Any business that offers public Wi-Fi where every guest or customer has access to the same log in credentials is opening up those people to a potential hack attack. Instead of using it, find a private Wi-Fi source through a wireless provider or something small and convenient and use that.

Safeguard your personal and financial data from hackers.

US Media Studios with a Consumer Report on Buying Used Cars

How much research should a consumer do before buying a used car?

Consumer Research

We can search for and read consumer reviews from several good websites such as Edmunds and Cars.com about the year, make and model of a car. We can spend hours evaluating those reviews. These reviews are generally frank and to the point. It is the consumer’s opinion about the specific vehicle, after reading reviews, if that vehicle is reliable or not. For instance, a consumer can read 10 reviews on one review site and five are positive and five are negative.  He or she can also read 10 reviews on another review website where six are positive and four are negative. That’s 20 consumer reviews read. Which reviews should the consumer believe? And should the consumer search for even more information about the vehicle, such as recalls for the vehicle, known mechanical issues for the vehicle? How many consumers do that? It is the consumer’s choice to spend the time to do that or not.

The Used Car Dealer’s Responsibility

Used car dealers have a responsibility too. When a dealer takes in a used car, they should take the time and expense to be sure that vehicle is operable and safe. All defects should be clearly noted on the vehicle’s documentation. US Media Studios has heard dealers’ standard reply “we wouldn’t sell you an unsafe car because we know it means possible lawsuits or the return of the vehicle.” In that case, why even put the vehicle up for sale if it could mean possible litigation or return of the vehicle? It is far easier and more profitable for the used car salesperson to sell a vehicle with open recalls and known defects and make commission than steer a consumer away from an unsafe, unreliable vehicle.  It is their innate responsibility to know everything about that vehicle. If a consumer expresses an interest with the vehicle, wouldn’t it be wise to do more than make cosmetic and cheap fixes, such as replacing windshield wipers? Would it be too expensive and time consuming to check the tire pressure, run it through a thorough mechanical and safety evaluation, before selling it to a consumer?

Bottom Line

There are two parties in a vehicle sale: consumer and dealer. Both parties should be transparent about the plusses and minuses of the vehicle of choice. No one wants to see a driver or passenger injured or killed due to faulty parts in the sold vehicle. That said, each US state also needs to step up and enact specific laws to protect consumers from bad car sales. A consumer’s life is more valuable the dealer’s profits. CBS News has a great article on car sales in Florida, and the link for the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration to search before buying a used car is very useful.

US Media Studios Offers Advice for Road Travel

Travel on America’s roads and interstates can be fun, adventuresome, and maybe troublesome. US Media Studios offers advice for road travel which we hope readers will find helpful. After all, it is no fun getting stuck on the side of the road with a car problem.

Road Tips for Road Warriors

Road warriors on road trips surely know the ups and downs of getting their destinations. They also know where the best travel center and rest areas are, and who to call when vehicle trouble forces them to wait on the side of the road for help.  It may also be useful to know that some states are better at taking care of stranded travelers than others. What might a driver need or want before hitting the road:

  • A good GPS for navigation and traffic updates
  • A charged smart phone to use for emergency calls, texting, and music, recorded books or whatever.
  • Water. Water keeps you hydrated.
  • Portable snacks such as whole fruit, protein bars, sandwiches just in case a long traffic jam delays the trip or the wait for help takes longer than normal.
  • Jumper cables, Fix a Flat, heavy duty duct tape, scissors, one regular size spare tire in good shape, tire pressure gauge a first aid kit, small and large working flashlights.

 Must Know

Every driver should have roadside assistance coverage. Breakdowns can happen on the commute to or from work, or on the way home from far away. It is reassuring to know that someone is on the way to rescue the driver and the vehicle. Most of roadside assistance coverage is not very expensive to add to vehicle insurance plans. Most companies that provide this can GPS locate the caller with permission from the caller first. Having had this locator service performed twice – once locally and once out of state – we vouch for its usefulness.

What Else?

USMedia Studios suggests getting a full vehicle inspection including all fluids replaced or topped up, tire pressure check, alignment, and mechanical and safety checks before getting on the road for a long road trip. Keep emergency numbers easy to find on smart phones or download an app if there is one. Hitting the open roads of America for pleasure or business is a great way to travel. Take the time to be sure you have everything needed before departure.

US Media Studios Highlights Heat-Related Ailment Prevention

America is heating up, and not just from the presidential campaigns.  Temperatures across the country are reaching to 100 degrees with heat indexes, or the “feels like” temperatures above that. Heat-related ailments are common when this happens. US Media Studios highlights prevention steps everyone can take to have a safe summer wherever you are.

Your Body and Heat Illnesses

Heat illnesses happen when the body can’t keep itself cool through sweating.
Heat illnesses are strongly related to days when the humidity level is high. High humidity hinders the body’s ability to cool itself.  On drier days, when there is less humidity in the air, body sweat evaporates more quickly than days when the air is heavy with moisture. If there is more moisture in the air, sweat takes longer to evaporate, therefore, making you feel hotter.

Heat-Related Illnesses and Prevention Tips

Heat rash or prickly rash is a skin irritation caused by excessive sweating while clothing covers the body. If this happens, move to a shady area, and roll shirt sleeves up, roll pant legs up. Loosen clothing until the sweat dries.
Heat cramps are muscle pain or spasms which occur during heavy exercise in the heat. Gently massive the cramped muscle and drink plenty of water or sports drinks with extra electrolytes and salt.
Heat exhaustion happens when the body is depleted of water or salt. Fatigue, weakness, and nausea are common symptoms of heat exhaustion. Get out of the heat and into an air conditioned or shady area. Use cool, damp cloths to lessen the body temperature, if in public. At home, take a cool shower. Drink plenty of water to rehydrate.
Heat stroke is the most serious of heat-related illnesses. It is life-threatening. There are two kinds:
Classic – Develops slowly over a few days after repeated exposure to hot, humid weather. It is non-exertional. Small children and the elderly are most affected by it.
Exertional – Happens faster, usually in hours and affects healthy, active people such as those who work outdoors like construction workers and athletes.
The body temp rises above 105 degrees and the person may or may not be sweating. Confusion, severe headache, rapid pulse and possibly loss of consciousness are common symptoms.
Move the person to a cooler area and fan air over them. Apply ice to underarms, neck, back and groin. If possible, place the affected person in a tub of cool water, and call 9-1-1.

Prevention is First

US Media Studios urges readers to always be aware of the heat index in the area before making plans to be active outside. If the temperature is high, so will the “feels like” temperature. Stay indoors where it is cool. Venture outdoors in the morning or evening hours when the heat is not so oppressive. Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing when outside. Take a hat or umbrella to keep the blazing sun from harming the head and body. Drink water or sports drinks to stay hydrated.

Preventing heat-related illnesses should be the first step taken.

US Media Studios Reviews Information about Bacterial Meningitis

Young men and women seem to be affected by bacterial meningitis more often than others. Perhaps this is because they are young and feel invincible, or perhaps because it is just that they happen to spend more time with each other in close proximity (dorm rooms, for example) than other age groups. US Media Studios views some important facts about this infection, shares a few prevention tips.

Vital Facts

Symptoms of bacterial meningitis can appear fast or over a few days. They usually develop within three to seven days of exposure. The symptoms may include sudden onset of fever, severe headache and a stiff neck. Nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and confusion are also symptoms. If any of these or even a few of these symptoms are present, visit a healthcare professional immediately for testing. Early antibiotic treatment is essential for recovery. Bacterial meningitis cannot be spread by breathing the same air as someone who has it. It is most often spread from person to person through saliva or spit (coughing or kissing). It is not as contagious as the common cold or the flu.

Prevention

The simplest way to prevent infection is to have children of all ages vaccinated against it. US Media Studios suggests asking prep school and universities for information regarding their policies on the prevention of infections and illnesses on campuses. Avoid sharing anything that involves the possible swapping of saliva, such as sharing drinking glasses or e-cigarettes. Cover the mouth when coughing or when someone else near you is coughing.

US Media Studios Takes On Teen E-Smoking Topic

The good news is that rate of teen smoking is going way down. The not so good news is that e-smoking, or “vaping”, has increased.

Cigarettes versus E-cigarettes

The US Centers for Disease Control reports that about 11 percent of high school students said they smoke, and 24 percent of high school students admitted they used e-cigarettes during the 30 days before the Centers ran their report. Even though regular cigarette smoking is way down, there is a rise in vaping. Medical professionals credit the heavy marketing campaign about the health risks of smoking, the rise in age to buy cigarettes or show ID to prove age.

E-Cigarette Laws

Starting in August 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration will ban the sale of e-cigarette and e-cigars to anyone under the age of 18. Health warnings will not be added to the packaging as there are laws in place allowing manufacturers time to change boxes, etc. Other areas of concern regarding teen health are the uptick in hookah usage, and teenage boys smoking flavored cigars. US Media Studios notes that vaping is not all the healthy, and more so when the vapor contains nicotine.

Why Are E-Cigarettes Bad for Teens

A team from a leading public health school found that many e-cigarette flavors deliver diacetyl, a chemical that causes "popcorn lung" found in workers at microwave popcorn packaging plants. Other researchers found formaldehyde, which is known to cause cancer, and is common is regular nicotine cigarettes. Vaping may be the next cool thing to smoking, but its health affect on teens is not so cool.

US Media Studios Focuses on the Benefits of Senior Wellness

Senior wellness centers are located throughout the country in communities where their services are needed the most. The centers provide more than just exercise classes and group card games. Many older Americans find and reap the benefits of these gathering places.

 Senior Community Center Benefits

There are 11,000 senior centers throughout the U.S., according to the National Council on Aging. Different centers focus on different goals, depending on the needs of the community. Senior wellness includes health and fitness awareness and activity, regularity in getting daily movement, healthy eating, and social activities which keep folks connected to other people in the community and their families. These centers also offer arts classes, free nutritious meals, free movies, and excursions to local sites such as museums, grocery stores. What’s to lose?

Community and City Support

Communities and cities which support senior wellness and/or community centers tend to have better attended centers. Work with area YMCAs, schools, and also with universities, community and four year colleges can yield better attendance, which leads to healthier seniors. US Media Studios notes the benefits of senior wellness are far greater than improved physical health. Social activities remind older people that they are valuable. A widow or widower that spends most of the time alone, feeling lonely, is less likely to take good care of their health. Imagine if that same person joined a wellness or fitness class, or perhaps went to a free movie with a friend once or twice a week. Senior wellness has many benefits which are measured beyond health and fitness. Find the nearest senior community center here

US Media Studios and PTO Left On the Table

Summer in the workplace can be a time of ease or a time of stress. Only one aspect of the business world can make a difference which one may occur.

Leaving It On The Table

More than fifty percent of employees don’t take all their paid vacation time, according to a report by Project: Time Off. Approximately 222 million of those days go to waste because they cannot be rolled over, banked or paid out. The main reason employees don’t use all of their time off: they are afraid they will not have a job to come back to. Blame this thought on the Great Recession. And now get over it. Most businesses give some vacation time to staff, and in most cases it is accrued. Even though some long time staffers accrue weeks and weeks of paid time off, some of it is left on the table to be swept in the proverbial garbage can at the end of the year. Take back the time you earned.

Vacation Takers

People who use their vacation time are more likely to return to work more relaxed, rested and focused than people who don’t use their vacation time. In addition, US Media Studios learns that the new policies of unlimited vacation days may do more harm than good. It’s a nice thought, but workers could take advantage of it, employees at all career levels may feel they are being monitored on the number of days off and how productive someone is in the office. Nonetheless, the unlimited days policies could be the panacea management and employees need to recharge and refocus, and in turn, become more committed to the job and the company.

Take It or Leave It

There will always be people on both sides of this fence. We all know colleagues who think they are too valuable to take time off, co-workers who think they will be canned if they take a long weekend, and those who believe if they clock longer hours that the reward will be greater. In fact, this is not true. Research shows that employees who took 11 or more vacation days a year were more likely to get a raise or bonus compared to those who less days off. So, get out of town, already!

US Media Studios and Top Five Healthiest Cities

Americans are taking up healthier lifestyles, getting more exercise and eating more nutritious foods. Also contributing to the uptick in healthier living is the number of cities which put more money into urging residents to get up and move.  US Media Studios takes a look at how the five healthiest cities in the United States made the American Fitness Index (AFI) list.

The Top Five and How They Got There

Washington, DC – Once again, the nation’s capital tops the list.  A whopping 96 percent of the population lives within a 10 minute walk of a park. The city spends $346 per resident on parks, and only 25 percent of residents are obese. Easy access to city parks encourages people to use them more often, and that means more people are getting exercise.

Minneapolis, MN – The second place city boasts a population that is keenly interested in better health, offers lots of parks and workout facilities for getting exercise.

Denver, CO – The Mile High City comes in third with a plenty of easy to access city parks, workout places, and residents who are active on a daily basis.

Portland, OR – A large, green and clean city with abundant bike paths and lanes, city parks and clean air which encourages people to go outside and take advantage of it.

San Francisco, CA – Another large American city with an ample number of parks, workout places, and outdoor activities sponsored by the city.

Overall Health Stats

US Media Studios notes from the AFI report that nearly 80 percent of Americans reported exercising within the past 30 days. This is great news as it shows an almost 70 percent increase since last year. The fitness report also states that less people are smoking, the diabetes death rate dropped, and there is an increase in the amount cities spend per resident on parks.

Now that summer is upon us, take time to find the best city parks in your hometown, and take advantage of the free exercise space.
